The Many Writing Layers of Jacob

Call Me Ishmael: Post-Biblical Universe
Переглядів 4552 роки тому
Abraham's firstborn was Ishmael, but according to the Hebrew story, he was the lesser son because his mom was an Egyptian slave. He was a placeholder until the right son was born by Abraham's wife, Sarah. A miraculous menopausal birth. But there are many indications in the story that Ishmael was a far more prominent character in the ancient world, even if he had to wait 1000 years to get his du...
Samson Is In Fact A SATIRICAL PLAY!
Переглядів 6172 роки тому
It turns out that if you read aloud the Samson story (Judges 13-16) in Hebrew as a script for a theater comedy - it morphs into an outrageously funny Greek satire that parodies biblical heroes and tropes. It was most likely written by Alexandrian Hellenistic Hebrews around the 200s BCE as a Hebrew version of Greek satire. To listen to all our episodes bit.ly/2VDZ8rW Visit our website podcastofb...
The Political Power of the Alphabet
Переглядів 4602 роки тому
The phonetic alphabet was invented by the Phoenicians back in the 9-10 centuries BCE, very close to Ancient Israel and Judea. As that revolutionary concept spread out, the Hebrews had a headstart and right away put up their "national" stories and religion into writing, turning Ancient Israelites and Judeans into one people, after the former got destroyed by the Assyrians. the power of language ...
How Come Isaac is Such a LAME Character?
Переглядів 3642 роки тому
After going through the myriad of stories about the first Hebrew patriarch, Abraham, we now get to his son Isaac. Even though he is supposed to be important, the biblical authors spend very little time and effort on developing his character and in making us care about him at all. That reveals the real purpose of Isaac in the biblical project. Listen to the full episode bit.ly/3opvalA For all ou...

When Genesis Breaks Its Own Mold
Переглядів 6482 роки тому
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah has remained iconic for 2,500 years, incorporated enthusiastically by later Abrahamic religions. But looking at it in its proper context, it is most likely a pre-religious story of city people breaking the laws of hospitality. Abraham gets his family deity to send in a SWAT team to extricate his brother from Sodom right before the carpet bombing. Listen to the fu...
The First Biblical War (in Siddim)
Переглядів 8132 роки тому
The only honest-to-god heroics in the story of Abraham is his small part in a regional war between four Mesopotamian kings and five local Canaanite vassals. The Mesopotamians crush the insignificant rebellion and take goodies and captives up north. One of the captives is Abraham's brother Lot, which is why Abraham and 300 of his men carry out a night raid to free him and bring back the loot tak...

Cain and Abel: The First Conflict in the Book
I was thinking about HotD last episode and then all of a sudden I got a flashback to the days when I watched and loved these Gil and Itamar discussions and breakdowns here at Got Academy XD Hello from 2024 hope you are doing well
Even comparing them is an insult to mongols. Here is an interesting fanfic idea. Have Princess Khutulun from actual mongol empire reborn as danerys and gain her past life memories after burning all khals and gaining dothraki. I for once would love to see mongol tactics and war machine used in westeros. ( Well dany will have to beat their stupidity of not wearing armours out and change their primary weapons )

Tell me you haven’t read Tolkien’s works without telling me. Kind of sad this channel faded into obscurity before you could be properly read.
To be fair, I appreciate Benioff telling me the characters didn’t want to die. Because their plan in the episode suggested otherwise

This goes far harder than it needs to
The Faith and the new High Septon did nothing wrong (well, in the books at least).
I mean, the thing is that the medieval peasantry has extremely limited class consciousness. Yes there is probably some degree to which many of them regard themselves as separate from or even opposed to the aristocracy, but they don‘t really have class solidarity. There‘s no faction Davos could join that would explicitly work to support his old smuggler and fisher friends and their family. Outside of a handful of peasant conspiracies, which incidentally happened in the early Renaissance, that sort of thing didn‘t happen; unless it took the form of Religious movements like the Hussites. But they ain‘t got that during most of Davos‘ life, either.
Gil, do you support the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people?
Coming back to these videos to watch the amazing intros and good insight 😂😂
6:56 it’s Boudica 10:38 Moors
I’ve read 1:55 too 😂
I have read The Ingenious Hobbit Mister Frodo of the Shire many times.
3:31 How do you reach to the conclusion that it was Gandalf who was telling Frodo to take off the ring? If the text were "realism" it would imply that Gandalf actually did not die in Moria? 14:07 Sam knows exactly how to use the ring in Mordor because of having seen Frodo's relationship of domination over Gollum, and he seeing himself as a lord of the ring is exactly what happened when Frodo tried to give the ring to Galadriel, but the narrator forgets to reminds us that Sam was also there. Great video!!
This video aged like a vintage.

Miss you Gil I totally didn't get to see your HoTD content! Can't wait to catch up. Hope you and yours are doing well 🙏
There is a great gem of a youtube video I found that's about this "historical chance" topic, in particular it links WW1 as you guys mention with the mathematical topic of chaos and fractals. This video made me think of that. (It's called "why ww1 was just bad luck: chaos theory & fractals")
I wanted to know, what do you think about Bernie Sanders now.
I am you son and you are me dad
Gil, what are your thoughts on the Israel-Gaza war? It would be interesting to hear a more intelligent and balanced view on how things can move forward. Specially as the narrative of what the Jewish people now are thinking is presented by people like Ben Gvir. Maybe you and your buddies can present a different view of what the Israeli people actually think? Hope you are well!
This is great
Best wishes to you Gil, and Itamar, & others! I hope you and all your loved ones, are OK right now! Best Wishes! :)
I hope both you guys are OK right now! You and your loved ones!
This is what's going to happen to the Gaza strip...
My mother was nearly at full term with me when the explosion happened at the cutlery factory where she worked. No one should ever have to feel ashamed of being born with a silver spoon up their arse. Gil,.............you're a monster.
came back to watch your videos many many years later and am shocked at how accurate your predictions and discussions were! high quality stuff
This podcast sounds like a hoax. The story of Samson is a satire but only if you read it in Hebrew! Otherwise, take our word for it. BS of Biblical proportions.
🤺☦🇷🇺Wrong. Here is the serious correct and accurate analysis of the holy verses: ✅Tishdal or Tishatal the Hurrians from Zagros & Urkesh = Tidal / Goyim = Gutium ✅Epirmupil = Amrapel / Sumer = Sumer (also ensi of Elam, subordinate of Zimri Lim) ❓Rim Sin I (Eriaku) or Arvilukpi of Marhasi (c. 2050 BC contemporary with Amar-Sin king of Ur) = Arioch / Ellasar = Isin-Larsa-Eshnnuna (or a ruler of Alishar Huyuk, Pontus, Dilmun, Meluhha or Magan) ✅Canaanite priest of the Jebusites = Malchizedek ❓Kudu-Lagamar = Chedorlaomer (unknown Maharsi ruler of Elamites?)
this analysys is as boring as the show with an elitist point of view
😂😂😂 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💯✔👌🏾👍🏾👍🏾 Great break down!!!
Great thanks for the alternative guys 🤨🤨🤨🤷🏾♂️

I came to the same conclusion. The High Sparrow Movement should have succeeded because it was the common people vs. the Lords & Ladies. These guys are spot on: religion can be an instrument for good or evil. (However, if the High Sparrow had succeeded, Westeros may have fallen apart and been ill-prepared for the last battle with the Night King ... we'll never know.)
I miss this dude. The OG co-host.
Daenerys ideas are somehow schizo: Wanting to break the wheel is the opposite of becoming queen.
Also Christopher Lee is a direct connection to both franchises since he plays a good guy turned bad. In LOTR he plays Saruman who was an Istari or one of the good wizards until he betrayed Gandalf and his kind and sided with Sauron because he was tempted by the dark lord’s power. In Star Wars he plays Count Dooku who was a noble Jedi that turned to the dark side and became a Sith Lord allied with Palpatine/Sidious as he was not only tempted by the dark side but wanted to destroy what he saw as a corrupt Galactic Republic.
As mainstream media might say, Mostly peaceful protester.
